William Wellington Corlett

William Wellington Corlett (born April 10, 1842 in Concord , Lake County , Ohio , † July 22, 1890 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the Wyoming Territory as a delegate in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

William Corlett attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1861 the Willoughby Collegiate Institute . At the Civil War Corlett attended the Union as a soldier on the side. In the meantime, he was taken prisoner of war, but was released again. After the war he continued his education with a law degree. In July 1866 he graduated from Union Law College in Cleveland with his law degree. After his admission to the bar, he taught law at various schools in Ohio.

Political career

In 1867 Corlett moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. There he worked as a lawyer. He became a member of the Republican Party . In 1869 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. At that time he was defeated by Stephen Friel Nuckolls , the Democratic Party candidate . In 1870 Corlett became a post holder in Cheyenne, an office he held until 1873; In 1871 he was elected to the territorial senate. Between 1872 and 1876 he was a district attorney in Laramie County . In the congressional elections of 1876, he was elected to succeed William Randolph Steele in the US House of Representatives. There he completed between March 4, 1877 and March 3, 1879 a legislative period as a delegate of his territory. In contrast to regular congressmen, delegates did not have the right to vote. In 1878 he decided not to run again.

Another résumé

After his tenure in Congress , William Corlett returned to practice as a lawyer. In 1879, he declined the offer of Chief Justice in the Wyoming Territory. Between 1880 and 1882 he was a member of the Territorial Government Council. Corlett was involved in various companies and he was one of the founders of the Cheyenne & Northern Railroad company . He died in Cheyenne in July 1890.
