Joseph Maull Carey (born January 19, 1845 in Milton , Delaware , † February 5, 1924 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) was an American lawyer , rancher, judge and politician who completed most of his political career in Wyoming.

Life

Joseph Carey trained at Fort Edward Collegiate Institute and Union College before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1864. In 1867 he received his license. Shortly thereafter, he oriented westward and served as a federal attorney for the Wyoming Territory until 1871 . From 1871 to 1876 he worked at the Wyoming Supreme Court before quitting that job and becoming a rancher. He was also working on his political career since 1872.

From 1881 to 1885 he was mayor of Cheyenne, after which he represented the Wyoming Territory until 1890 as a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives of the United States . After Wyoming State had become, Carey was for the Republicans in the Senate voted. However, re-election in 1895 failed. He retired from politics until 1911 and worked as a lawyer. In 1911 he managed to be elected governor of Wyoming. A year later he turned his back on the Republican Party and turned to the Progressive Party , which had made it its mission to re-elect Theodore Roosevelt as US President. Carey also served as vice president of the Federal Land Bank and served on the board of directors of the University of Wyoming at Laramie .

His son Robert also became a politician. Like his father, he held the offices of Governor of Wyoming and the US Senator for that state.
