George W. Baxter
George White Baxter (born January 7, 1855 in Hendersonville , North Carolina , † December 18, 1929 in Manhattan , New York ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).
Career
His family moved to Knoxville , Tennessee two years after he was born , where he later attended the University of Tennessee . Then he went to the Military Academy at West Point from 1873 to 1877 . As a second lieutenant he then served for three years in the 3rd US Cavalry . He then quit the military and moved to Wyoming in 1881 , where he ranched cattle.
President Grover Cleveland made him governor of the Wyoming Territory in 1886 . He then took his oath of office on November 11, 1886 and held the office until December 20, 1886. In 1889 he represented his state at its constitutional convention and failed a year later in his candidacy for the office of governor to the Republican Francis E. Warren . Baxter returned to Knoxville in 1892, where he did banking and cotton businesses.
