William A. Richards (around 1895)

William Alford Richards (born March 9, 1849 in Hazel Green , Grant County , Wisconsin , † July 25, 1912 in Melbourne , Australia ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and governor of the state of Wyoming .

biography

After attending public schools in Hazel Green and Galena ( Illinois ) he was from 1866 to 1869 teachers in Grant County. Between 1870 and 1874 he completed a law degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha . In 1873 he went with his brother to the Wyoming Territory , where they worked as surveyors on the southern and western borders of the territory . He then worked as a surveyor and civil engineer in Nebraska and Oakland ( California ). In 1879 he was elected land surveyor of Santa Clara County; however, he soon had to resign for health reasons and settled in Colorado . In 1881 he accepted the election to land surveyor of El Paso County and city engineer of Colorado Springs .

After a few years in other parts of the United States, he returned to Wyoming in 1884, where he set up a ranching in the Big Horn Basin . In 1886, Richards was elected District Commissioner for Johnson County , which was founded in 1875 . In 1889 he was appointed Supreme Surveyor General of the Territory by US President Benjamin Harrison .

After his election as governor of the state of Wyoming, he was from January 7, 1895 to January 2, 1899 in office.

He was then US President William McKinley , first as Deputy Commissioner in the States United General Land Office appointed and was one of those responsible for the classification and distribution (land lottery) of Indian settlements in Comanche County and Kiowa County in Oklahoma Territory to white settlers before he was commissioner of the agency from 1903 to 1907.

In 1909 he was appointed the first commissioner of taxation for the state of Wyoming. He held this office until 1912. In the same year he died as a member of a delegation of the US Irrigation Committee on a trip to Australia in Melbourne.
