Amos W. Barber

Amos Walker Barber (born April 26, 1861 in Doylestown , Pennsylvania , † May 19, 1915 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) was an American politician of the Republican Party and governor of the state of Wyoming.

Life

After graduating from high school, Barber completed studies in literature and medicine at the University of Pennsylvania . After graduating from medical school, he became a physician at the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1883 before being appointed surgeon at Fort Fetterman Military Hospital in Wyoming in 1885. After being appointed military surgeon, he took part in General George Crook's campaign against the Apaches in Arizona from 1885 to 1886 . Barber then served as a military doctor at Fort DA Russell. After retiring from military service, he opened a doctor's office in Cheyenne.

After joining the Republican Party and the incorporation of the previous Wyoming Territory as the 44th state in the Union, Barber was elected Secretary of State of Wyoming in September 1890 . As such, he was after the election of Governor Francis E. Warren to the US Senator from November 24, 1890 to January 2, 1893 acting governor of the state. After the election and inauguration of John E. Osborne as the new governor on January 2, 1893, he took over the office of Secretary of State again and held this post until January 1895.

During the Spanish-American War of 1898 Barber was again active as a military doctor. After the war he resumed his work as a doctor in Cheyenne.
