Francis Emroy Warren (born June 20, 1844 in Hinsdale , Berkshire County , Massachusetts , †  November 24, 1929 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ), governor and senator of Wyoming .

biography

Warren, the primary school and the Hinsdale Academy graduated, came after the start of the Civil War in 1861 as a volunteer the 49th  Infantry Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers , where he eventually during the war to Corporal ( Corporal ascent). The high point of his military career was the award of the Medal of Honor on May 27, 1863. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, Warren settled in Massachusetts , where he made a considerable fortune as a farmer. At the same time he served as a captain in the militiafrom Massachusetts before settling in the Wyoming Territory in 1868 , where he worked as a real estate and life insurance broker.

Soon after, Warren began a political career as a councilor in Cheyenne from 1873 to 1874 , where he was one of the initiators of the first lighting system. He later became a member of the Territorial Assembly ( Territorial Assembly ) of the Wyoming Territory, which also elected him from 1873 to 1874 and 1884 to 1885 as their president. Warren then continued his political career as chairman of the Central Territorial Committee of the Republican Party and in 1876, 1879, 1882 and 1884 as Treasurer of the Wyoming Territory ( Territorial Treasurer ) until he was finally mayor of the capital Cheyenne in 1885.

On February 28, 1885, Warren was appointed governor of the Wyoming Territory for the first time by US President Chester A. Arthur and held this office until November 11, 1886. President Benjamin Harrison reappointed him governor of the territory on April 9, 1889. During this period, the was territory statehood (on July 10, 1890 Statehood awarded) and the area became the United States as the 44th  state connected. On September 11, 1890, Warren was elected the new state's first governor.

However, he only held this office until November 24, 1890, as he was elected US Senator immediately before that . As such, Warren initially served as Senator Class 1 until 1893 , before he represented Wyoming's interests in Washington as Senator Class 2 from 1895 until his death in 1929 . During his almost 40 years as a senator, he was also chairman of several senate committees. After the death of Henry Cabot Lodge on November 9, 1924 Warren was senior Senator with the honorary title "Dean of the United States Senate".

In his honor, the Air Force Base in Cheyenne was named " F. E. Warren Air Force Base ", which was partly due to the fact that the later General of the Armies and then Captain John J. Pershing married his daughter Helen Frances Warren in 1905 and within a year 1906 was promoted to brigadier general.
