John Barrasso
John Anthony Barrasso (* 21st July 1952 in Casper , Wyoming ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . Since 2007 he has represented the state of Wyoming in the US Senate .
biography
Early life
John Barrasso, a 1974 graduate of Georgetown University , received his doctorate in orthopedics from the same faculty four years later in 1978 . He was then doctor at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven ( Connecticut ).
Barrasso later returned to Wyoming, opened his own practice and is also the staff director of the Wyoming Medical Center . At the same time, he is a member of numerous medical organizations, including the American Medical Association , where he sits on the Ethics and Judicial Affairs Committee. Barrasso is also a doctor at various high schools in Wyoming and was once awarded the title "Wyoming Physician of the Year" (ie "Wyoming Physician of the Year").
Barrasso is considered conservative, a supporter of the rights movement and a member of the National Rifle Association .
Political career
As early as 1996 Barrasso tried to win a seat in the United States Senate, but he narrowly defeated his opponent Mike Enzi in the primary . This got 33% of the vote, while Barrasso received only 32%. Barrasso was elected to the Wyoming Senate in 2002 and confirmed in office in 2006. In his role, he was responsible for the infrastructure, transportation, and highways of Wyoming.
After the death of Senator Craig L. Thomas on June 4, 2007, Barrasso was appointed his successor on June 22 by Governor Dave Freudenthal and sworn in on June 25. He was one of three candidates that Wyoming's Republican Party board had to submit to the Democratic governor, preferred to Cynthia Lummis and Tom Sansonetti. In the 2008 by-election, Barrasso was re-elected for the remaining four years of the term. He won with 73.4 percent of the vote against the Democrat Nicholas H. Carter. In 2015, he succeeded Barbara Boxer as Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works .
Private life
John Barrasso divorced his first wife and remarried in 2008. He has three children and is a devout Presbyterian .
