Cynthia Marie Lummis Wiederspahn (born September 10, 1954 in Cheyenne , Wyoming ) is an American politician . From January 2009 to January 2017 she represented the state of Wyoming in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Cynthia Lummis attended the schools in her home country and then studied animal science, biology and law at the University of Wyoming . Then she took over the ranch from her family, where she still breeds cattle today. Politically, she became a member of the Republican Party . From 1979 to 1983 and between 1985 and 1993 she was a member of the Wyoming House of Representatives , and from 1993 to 1995 she was a member of the State Senate . Between 1994 and 1996 she also served on Governor Jim Geringer's staff . From 1999 to 2007, she served as Wyoming State Treasurer . In 2007, she was one of three candidates for the replacement of the seat in Congress, which had become vacant after the death of US Senator Craig L. Thomas . Governor Dave Freudenthal chose John Barrasso .

Congressman

In 2008, Cynthia Lummis applied to succeed Barbara Cubin , who had represented Wyoming in the US House of Representatives since 1995. (Note: Wyoming state has only one representative in the US House of Representatives). In her party's primary election, she clearly beat her main competitor, businessman and rancher Mark Gordon . In the elections of November 4, 2008, against the national trend, she defeated the Democrat Gary Trauner with 53 percent of the vote . From January 3, 2009, she represented the State of Wyoming in the US House of Representatives. Since she was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2014, she was able to exercise her mandate until 2017. In 2016, she decided not to run again. Therefore, she left the House of Representatives on January 3, 2017. She was a member of several committees and caucuses . Between 2011 and 2013 she was Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues .

Private life

Cynthia Lummis has been married to businessman and lawyer Alvin Wiederspahn since 1983 . He was formerly a member of the Democratic Party and represented it in both chambers of the Wyoming Legislature . The couple have a daughter together.
