Franklin Wheeler Mondell (born November 6, 1860 in St. Louis , Missouri , † August 6, 1939 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician .

Live and act

Mondell grew up in Dickinson County , Iowa . In 1887 he moved to the Wyoming Territory and settled in Newcastle , a city he helped build. In 1888, Mondell was elected Mayor of Newcastle and held that office until 1895. When Wyoming became a United States state in 1890 , Mondell was elected a Republican to the state's first Senate . After his re-election in 1892, he became President of the Senate in the next legislative term.

Two years later he was elected to the US House of Representatives , where he represented his state from March 4, 1895 to March 3, 1897 and again from March 4, 1899 to March 3, 1923. During the 66th and 67th Congresses he was majority leader in the House of Representatives. In 1922, he did not apply for re-election, but instead ran for a seat in the US Senate . However, he was subject to the Democratic incumbent John B. Kendrick .

After retiring from Congress, Mondell was appointed director of the War Finance Corporation in 1923 and held this post until his resignation in July 1925. He also studied law and practiced after his admission to the legal profession in Washington. As a Republican, Mondell was a delegate to the Republican National Convention several times , namely in 1892, 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912 and most recently in 1924. He died in Washington in 1939 and was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery .
