Dickinson County was formed in 1851 from former parts of Kossuth County. It was named after Daniel S. Dickinson (1800–1866), a US Senator from New York State (1844–1851).

The first settlers came in 1856. Fighting with Indians brought the settlement to a standstill. It was not until 1857 that the county was formed again and the administration was built a year later.

The first court and administrative building in Spirit Lake was partially completed in 1860. During the civil war it was used as a barracks and construction could not be finished until 1868. In 1872 it was destroyed by fire.

The next courthouse was built from the reused bricks from the first building. As this soon no longer met the requirements, construction of the third court and administration building began in 1890. A year later this could be handed over to its destination. In 1957, 1976 and 1978 extensions were added to the building.
