geography
The county is located in southeastern Iowa and is around 25 miles north of the Missouri border . It has an area of 1129 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water.
The county is traversed by the Des Moines River , a right tributary of the Mississippi, from northwest to southeast .

The Wapello County was formed on February 17, 1843 from designated as free - but in fact settled by Indians - territory. It was named after Wapello, a chief of the Fox Indians.
After the land was released for the new settlers on May 1, 1843, hundreds staked out their new claim along the Des Moines River. 5,000 people lived here within a month. The first courthouse was a simple log cabin.
The county's first weekly newspaper, the Des Moines Courier , was published in 1848. The second courthouse was built of stone. The building was used until 1855. The third was used until 1891. The fourth and current Wapello County Courthouse was taken into use on May 17, 1894. This five-storey building was built from sandstone and renovated in 1950.
In 1881, Wapello County experienced a minor gold rush when a soil speculator claimed he had found gold in nearby Bear Creek. As a result, land prices multiplied overnight.

According to the 2010 census , Wapello County had 35,625 people in 14,764 households. The population density was 31.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.37 people each in the 14,764 households.
The racial the population was composed of 92.1 percent white, 1.4 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.7 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.5 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 9.1 percent of the population.
22.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.8 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years or older. 51.1 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 40,093 USD . The per capita income was $ 22,376. 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
