The Hardin County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 17,534 residents and a population density of 11.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Eldora .
geography
The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Iowa and is traversed by the Iowa River . It has an area of 1,476 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water bodies. The following counties border Hardin County:

history
Hardin County was formed in 1851. It was named after Colonel John J. Hardin , who died in the Mexican-American War .
The county has had three courthouses in its history. The first was a small wooden building that burned down in the 1850s . The second courthouse was a two story building on the site of the current county sheriff's office. The third courthouse, which is still in use today, was built in 1892 and opened on September 19, 1893; it was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

The racial the population was composed of 95.8 percent white, 1.2 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 3.7 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Statistically, 2.20 people lived in each of the 7,540 households.
23.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 55.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.0 percent were 65 years or older. 50.3 percent of the population was female.
