The county is located in northwest Iowa, about 70 km to the north from Minnesota , about 40 km to the west from South Dakota and about 45 km to the southwest from Nebraska . It has an area of 1495 square kilometers.
The Little Sioux River , a left tributary of the Missouri, flows through the county from north to south .
