Guthrie County is part of the metropolitan area around the city of Des Moines .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Iowa and has an area of 2536 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water.
It is from the Middle Raccoon River and the South Raccoon River flows through which over the River Raccoon and Des Moines River to the basin of the Mississippi are. In the northeast of Guthrie County, the Middle Raccoon River is dammed up to Lake Panorama .

Guthrie County was formed on January 15, 1851 from former parts of Jackson County. It was named after Captain Edwin B. Guthrie , who died in the Mexican War.
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Guthrie County had 10,954 people in 4,764 households. The population density was 7.2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.25 people lived in each of the 4,764 households.
The racial the population was composed of 97.6 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
