The county is located in northern Iowa and borders Minnesota . It has an area of 1040 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water.
The Shell Rock River , which is part of the Mississippi basin via the Cedar River and the Iowa River , flows through the county from north to south.

Worth County was formed in 1851. It was named after General William Jenkins Worth , who became famous in the Mexican-American War .
