Manly is located in northern Iowa on Beaver Creek , which is part of the Mississippi River basin via the Shell Rock River , the Cedar River and the Iowa River . The Iowa- Minnesota border runs 15 miles north.

Manly's beginnings go back to 1877 when a railroad crossing was built here. The settlement was named Manly Junction after a rail freight agent. In 1898 the place was incorporated as the Town of Manly as an independent municipality. The current status of City of Manly was given to the city in 1973.
