The Iowa Interstate Railroad (IAIS) is a subsidiary of the Rail Development Corporation . Its main line runs from Council Bluffs , Iowa to Chicago with a branch line to Peoria , Illinois . IAIS also serves Cedar Rapids , but uses the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway (CIC) route.

The railway operates and serves intermodal terminals in Blue Island and Council Bluffs. Intermodal transshipment facilities had also existed in Newton since 1986 and in West Liberty since 1997 , but most of their volume was lost due to the closure of the Maytag factory in Newton and a Maytag distribution center at West Liberty and were closed until 2009.

Trains run regularly between the Omaha area and Chicago . The company also provides access to ship-rail terminals on the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers .

The most important transport goods are agricultural products, plastic, paper, steel, scrap, wood and coal. The ethanol business is becoming increasingly important . The company is currently involved in the construction of five production facilities.

The company is a member of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and the American Short-line and Regional Rail Association (ASLRRA).

vehicles

In 2018, GE Transportation Systems ordered three more Evolution Series locomotives , which were delivered in 2019. IAIS thus has 20 locomotives of this type, supplemented by around 20 older EMD diesel locomotives of the type GP38-2 .
