The Association of American Railroads (AAR) is the industry association for the major freight railways of North America ( Canada , Mexico, and the United States ). The Amtrak and some other regional railways are also members. Edward Hamberger has been President of AAR since 1998 .

The association was created on October 12, 1934 through the merger of the following five business-related associations:

  • American Railway Association
  • Association of Railway Executives
  • Bureau of Railroad Economics
  • Railway Accounting Officers Association
  • Railway Treasury Officers Association

The organization is based in Washington, DC

President of the AAR

Reporting marks

One of the association's activities is the assignment of reporting marks - a code of 2 to 4 letters that uniquely identifies the owner of the rolling stock or the container to be transported .

Classification

The AAR also classifies the railways according to their size.

  • Class 1 = railroad with sales in excess of $ 467 million
  • Regional Railroad = Railway company that operates a route of more than 350 miles and / or has a turnover of more than $ 40 million (so-called Class 2 according to the rules of the Surface Transportation Board )
  • Local Railroad (formerly Shortline Railroad ) = no "Class 1" or "Regional" railroad, but with scheduled operation (so-called Class 3 according to STB)
  • Terminal and Switching Railroad (shunting company) = Railway that does not carry out point-to-point transports (line traffic), but rather establishes the connection between end customers and the other railway companies
