The VELO Sports Center is a speed track in Carson , California , and the only one in the United States that meets the international standards of the UCI World Cycling Federation .
The VELO Sports Center is located within the StubHub Center sports complex on the California State University campus, Dominguez Hills . The cycling track is 250 meters long, 7 meters wide and made of Siberian spruce , the curve superelevation is 45 degrees. The track serves as a training center for the US national track team . The first competition on the track was the UCI Track World Championships for Juniors in 2004. The sports facility can also be used for other sporting purposes, including volleyball and basketball as well as Taekwondo tournaments. Fitness companies are also based there.
In October 2013 the Hollywood Cycling Championship was held at the VELO Sports Center , the first multi- day, six- day track cycling competition in the USA in 40 years (the last six-day race took place in Detroit in 1973 ). The organizer was the former American six-day driver Jack Simes , who had even finished second in Detroit. Among the starters were, in addition to young US drivers , well-known names from Europe such as Franco Marvulli , Jesper Mørkøv and Andreas Graf . The Germans Leif Lampater and Christian Grasmann won .
The velodrome is located a few hundred meters south of the former site of the Olympic Velodrome for the Olympic Games , which was demolished in 2003. In its place is the football stadium of the StubHub Center today .
Until the opening of the Mattamy National Cycling Center in Milton, Canada in January 2015, the VELO Sports Center was the only cycling track in North America that was approved for international UCI competitions.
