Track cycling world cup
The Track Cycling World Cup comprised three to five World Cup races per season and took place from 1993 to 2020 during the winter months.
The Track Cycling World Cup was introduced by the World Cycling Association Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 1993 in order to counter the creeping loss of popularity of track cycling and the associated threatened reduction in the number of Olympic cycling disciplines by the IOC , which was only partially successful. Another reason was the sporting upgrading of track cycling and a useful addition to the popular six-day races , which are considered a good combination between sport and entertainment.
World Cup races were held in all disciplines of the track cycling world championships over a period of three days (Friday – Sunday). From 2007/2008 a total of nine men's and eight women's competitions were held; from the 2010/2011 season ten men's and eight women's competitions. The Omnium was newly included in the program, adapted to the Olympic program .
The placements at the World Cups determined the qualification of individual drivers for the World Championships as well as the number of starting positions of the individual nations.
From the 2020/21 season onwards, the Track Cycling World Cup was replaced by the UCI Track Cycling Nations' Cup , which is to be held in three races a year from April to September and is reserved for national teams.
