UCI Track Cycling Nations' Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UCI Track Cycling Nations' Cup (s., Dt .: UCI Track Cycling-Nations Cup ) is a series of Track Cycling Competitions by the International Cycling Union to be held for the first time in 2021.

The three rounds of each UCI Track Cycling Nations' Cup in the months of March to September are to be among the main events of track cycling alongside the UCI Track World Championships in October and the subsequent UCI Track Cycling World League .

Of the three annual events, one each should take place in Asia or Oceania, Europe or Africa and America. It replaces the UCI Track Cycling World Cup held between 1993 and 2020 , which comprised six events per season and, like this one, is primarily intended to qualify for the World Track Championships, which were moved from March to October. By reducing the number of events that should precede the World Cup, the costs of the associations are to be reduced. In contrast to the World Cup, only national teams and no UCI track teams should take part in the Nations Cup , which the UCI explains with equal opportunities in qualifying for the World Championships, as not all associations have drivers in track teams. Among the disciplines of the Nations Cup are the World Cup disciplines Team Pursuit , Team Sprint , Individual Pursuit , Sprint , Keirin , time trial , Madison and Omnium belong, with more disciplines can be added. In June 2020, it was announced that the elimination run would be included in the program as an independent competition.

Criticism of this concept was on the one hand the postponement of the events into the summer months, which leads to unfavorable competition with road cycling , and on the other hand the exclusion of the track teams, which could lead to drivers outside of national teams migrating from track cycling. In June 2020, the rules of the competition were published, according to which, on the one hand, the elimination drive was started as an independent competition and, on the other hand, contrary to the initial intentions, track teams are also allowed, whereby the results of these drivers are counted as a separate team classification instead of the national classification.
