Omnium

Omnium (from Latin: from all = all around) describes a track cycling competition which, according to the current regulations, consists of four different endurance disciplines.

regulate

An omnium is used at continental and world championships. The Omnium has also been part of the Olympic program since 2012 . Since the single pursuit, the points race and the two-man team race were canceled for this and for the introduction of further Olympic women's competitions, the elimination race was part of the omnium, and the distances of the original sub-disciplines increased to compensate for the endurance riders. The old competition mode last applied at the 2010 World Championships.

Until October 2016, the omnium consisted of the following sub-disciplines:

Originally, points were awarded in each sub-competition according to the rank achieved and the driver with the lowest total number of points won. In the event of a tie, the lowest total time calculated from the three time trial competitions (250 m flying, single pursuit, 1000/500 m time trial) counted. After a rule change introduced in 2014, 40, 38, 36 etc. points were awarded to the first drivers in the first five competitions, to which the points for sprints and lap wins are then added. The winner is the driver with the highest total number of points. In the event of a tie, the finish of the last sprint of the points race decides.

After another rule change in October 2016, the competitions with individual start were canceled and a speed race was added. The competition was reduced from two to one day. The aim of the reform was to make the Omnium a real endurance competition and thus to balance the championship program more between the sprint and endurance area.

The Omnium has consisted of the following sub-disciplines since 2016:

  • Scratch (men 10 km, women and juniors 7.5 km, juniors 5 km)
  • Tempo races (men 10 km, women and juniors 7.5 km, juniors 5 km)
  • Elimination run
  • Points race (men 25 km, women and juniors 20 km, juniors 15 km)

From 1961 to 1984, German amateur champions in the Omnium were determined in Germany, with the sub-disciplines sprint, time trial, elimination race and points race. An omnium competition, for example, was also held at the “Great Christmas Prize”, which took place annually until 2008, in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle .
