Matthew "Matt" Walls (born April 20, 1998 in Manchester ) is a British cyclist who competes on track and road .

Athletic career

Matthew Walls began cycling when he was nine years old, initially mountain biking with his father in the Pennines just for fun . At school he tried various sports, including triathlon , where he had the most fun cycling. He attended a test training session at the Manchester Velodrome and then became a member of the Eastland Velo Club . He competed in his first race at the age of eleven and subsequently won national titles in various age groups. From the age of 15 he went through all of British Cycling's talent programs . In an interview in June 2018 he stated that he did not prefer any discipline - track or road - but one day he would like to win a Belgian street classic such as Paris-Roubaix .

In 2016, Matthew Walls first attracted international attention when he won silver in the points race at the UCI Junior World Championships and bronze in the team pursuit with Ethan Hayter , Reece Wood and Fred Wright . At the Junior European Championships he won two titles: with Hayter in the two-man team driving and with Hayter, Wood and Wright also in the team pursuit. In 2017 he started internationally in the U23 category and became European champion with Matthew Bostock , Hayter and Joe Holt . He also won his first two British elite championship titles, in Omnium and team pursuit. With Ethan Hayter he won the U23 competition at the Berlin six-day race .

In spring 2018, Walls succeeded on the road by winning two stages of the Flèche du Sud and one stage of the Paris-Arras Tour . In August, he was in Glasgow European champion in the elimination races .
