Ion mobility mass spectrometer

Ion mobility mass spectrometer (IMS-MS) is a coupling of ion mobility spectrometers with mass spectrometry .

Earl W. McDaniel published the first work on IMS-MS as early as 1962. In 1963 McAfee and Edelson published work on an IMS-TOF coupling. Further research devices followed. It was not until 1999 that DE Clemmer and colleagues developed an IMS-TOF with an orthogonally flanged TOF. This ultimately led to the development of an ion mobility quadrupole CID-TOF-MS device by Micromass (UK) and the first commercial device of this type by Waters Corporation in 2006.

The advantage of coupling ion mobility and mass spectrometer is that the drift time in the IMS cell depends on the cross-sectional area of ​​the ion, while the mass spectrometer selects according to the mass-to-charge ratio . Thus z. B. isomeric compounds with different cross-sectional areas can be distinguished. In recent years, applications for IMS-MS have increasingly been discovered in the area of ​​"small molecules".
