Wassyl Mykolajowytsch Schkljar ( Ukrainian Василь Миколайович Шкляр , scientific transliteration Vasylʹ Mykolajovyč Škljar ; born June 10, 1951 in Hanschaliwka , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian best-selling author and political activist.

Life

Vasyl Schkljar was born in Hanshalivka ( Ганжалівка ) in Lysjanka district of the Ukrainian Cherkassy Oblast . His family moved with him in 1963 to nearby Zvenyhorodka , where he graduated from high school in 1968 and then began studying at the Faculty of Philology at the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev , which he completed in 1973. His first literary works were published as early as 1967. Due to a student exchange, he was studying Armenian language and literature at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Yerevan .

After graduating, he initially worked as a research assistant at the Central State Historical Archive and then as a journalist. His experiences, which he gained between 1988 and 1998 as a political journalist and war correspondent (including details of the rescue operation of General Jochar Dudayev's family ), he processed in 2001 in his novel "Елементал" (German: Elementary ).

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and Ukrainian independence, he became press spokesman for the Ukrainian Republican Party , devoted himself to his creative work, was editor-in-chief of the Dnipro publishing house and deputy chairman of the National Association of Writers of Ukraine . In September 2015 he became a member of the political council of the Ukrainian party "UKROP"

Schkljar is the winner of many renowned literary prizes as well as national and international competitions. Each of his novels caused great resonance in society. This is how the edition of his novel “Залишенець. Чорний ворон ”(German: “ The Remnant Black Raven ” ) about the struggle of Ukrainian insurgents against Soviet power in the 1920s has now reached 150,000 and his novel“ Ключ ”(German: key) has been published for the tenth time. His novels are translated into English, Bulgarian, Armenian, Swedish, Slovak and Russian, among others.

Honors

Schkljar was declared the winner of the Taras Shevchenko Prize in 2011 on the decision of the Committee for the National Prize of Ukraine for his historical novel "Чорний ворон" (German: Black Ravens ) , but declined in protest against what he saw as Ukrainophobic policies of the time Ukrainian Minister of Education Dmytro Tabachnyk accepted the award.
