Gerben Thijssen (born June 21, 1998 in Genk ) is a Belgian cyclist who competes in races on the road and track .
Athletic career
In 2014 Gerben Thijssen won his first national title when he became Belgian youth champion in the Omnium. He was on the podium in other disciplines. The following year he had his first international successes: He was third in the junior world championship in points driving and together (with Robbe Ghys ) vice European junior champion in two-man team driving . In 2016, Thijssen won a silver medal in the two-man team driving and a bronze medal in the points test at the Junior European Championships with Jules Hester .
At the second round of the Track Cycling World Cup in Apeldoorn in 2016/17 , the Belgian four-man, consisting of Thijssen, Moreno De Pauw , Kenny De Ketele , Robbe Ghys and Jonas Rickaert , finished second. At the six-day race in Gent , Thijssen won the U23 race together with Hester. In October, at the age of 19, he became European champion in the elimination run at the European Railway Championships in Berlin .
In 2018, Thijssen was the Belgian U23 champion in road racing and the elite in the team time trial . The following year he won a stage each of the Tour d'Eure-et-Loir and A Travers les Hauts de France and won the Philippe Van Coningsloo Memorial .
In November 2019, Gerben Thijssen fell at the six-day race in Ghent and had to be hospitalized, where, in addition to fractures, minor cerebral hemorrhages were found. The race was then canceled.
