The eighth UEC train European Championships the elite found from 19 to 22 October 2017 in Berlin Velodrome instead.

The last international cycling competitions in the Berlin Velodrome were the UCI Track World Championships in 1999 .

A total of 23 decisions were made, with 22 disciplines being contested by women and men. Only the pacemaker race was extended solely by male athletes.

Before the start of the European Championships, the surface of the 250-meter slope in the Velodrom was renewed; In addition, the cycling track was adapted to the current safety standards of the UCI World Cycling Association . The Senate Department for Home Affairs and Sport provided up to 1.6 million euros for this.

At the European Championships, 264 drivers from 29 nations started, the highest number since the introduction of the European Championship in 2010. Among them were the Olympic champions Kristina Vogel , Miriam Welte (both Germany), Elis Ligtlee (Netherlands), Katie Archibald , Elinor Barker , Steven Burke , Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner (all Great Britain) as well as numerous track world champions such as Lucas Liß , Maximilian Levy , Robert Förstemann , Joachim Eilers (all Germany), Filippo Ganna (Italy), Denis Dmitrijew (Russia), Lotte Kopecky (Belgium) and Benjamin Thomas (France).

The most successful nation with five gold, four silver and three bronze medals was the host country Germany, followed by France with a total of eight medals, including three gold medals, and Great Britain.

The German female drivers dominated the short-term disciplines. Kristina Vogel alone won the gold medal in Sprint and Keirin . In the team sprint she also won silver together with Miriam Welte and Pauline Grabosch , while Welte was European champion in the 500 meter time trial ahead of Grabosch. The Danish driver Trine Schmidt became two-time European champion in the points race and in the scratch . Brit Katie Archibald was also successful with two golds in single pursuit and omnium .

Among the men, the French athletes were particularly successful with five gold medals. Sébastien Vigier became European champion in sprint and team sprint (with Benjamin Édelin and Quentin Lafargue ), Florian Maitre and Benjamin Thomas were twice successful in team pursuit and in two-man team driving .

The German women's four-man team with Lisa Brennauer , Gudrun Stock , Charlotte Becker and Lisa Klein crashed in round one of the team pursuit after the team had set a new German record in qualifying with 4: 25.355 minutes . Brennauer broke his arm. Her teammate Romy Kasper fell during the scratch , but started the day after in the two-man team event . Post-EM examinations revealed that she had suffered two broken ribs and a bruised lung.
