Ryan Andrew Owens (born September 29, 1995 in Aspley Guise ) is a British track cyclist .

Athletic career

Ryan Owens comes from a cycling family; his father and his grandfather were racing cyclists. He himself began cycling at the age of eleven and started racing at the age of 16. In 2011 he was British runner-up in the individual time trial in the under 16. A serious calf injury in 2012 put him out of action for eleven months. In 2013 he was third in the British Junior Championship in the Keirin . The following year he began studying at Loughborough University and dominated the British University Championships in May 2015, where he won three golds. He set two new records for these championships.

At the time, Owens drove nearly 600 miles a week between the Lee Valley Velodrome and the Derby Velodrome for training purposes. In 2015 he was accepted into British Cycling 's training program and moved to Manchester , the location of the national training center.

In 2016 Ryan Owens was nominated as a substitute driver for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , but was not used. In the same year he was U23 European champion in the team sprint with Jack Carlin and Joseph Truman . The trio won the first two races of the Track Cycling World Cup in Apeldoorn and Glasgow later that year .
