Philipp Johann August Ludwig Freiherr von Ledebur (born September 18, 1776 in Hamm , † April 26, 1852 in Schwedt / Oder ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

origin

August Ludwig came from the Westphalian noble family Ledebur . He was the seventh of nine sons of Christian Heinrich Ernst von Ledebur († 1794) and his wife Dorothea Marie Frederike, born Freiin von Goertz-Wrisberg . His father was chamber president and cathedral capitular in Minden as well as Mr. von Mühlenburg , Crollage and Fiegenburg . The later Prussian Lieutenant General Alexander von Ledebur (1774–1850) was his brother.

Military career

Ledebur was brought up in the Schildesche monastery , where two of his aunts worked as canons . Initially destined for a civilian career, he then opted for a military career. In May 1792 he joined the cuirassier regiment "von Ilow" of the Prussian army in Salzwedel . As a cornet he managed to take two himself in the battle of Pirmasens on September 14, 1793, in which his regiment captured 13 enemy guns. Because of the severe wounds he suffered, he took a year off after the Peace of Basel to study in Göttingen during 1800 , after which he returned to his garrison. During the wars against Napoleon Bonaparte he was captured near Auerstedt in 1806 , but escaped happily and acquired the order Pour le Mérite during the attack he directed at Bialokowo . Promoted to major in 1811 , he found no opportunity for a new award in the campaign of 1813 and was appointed commander of the newly established Elbe National Hussar Regiment outside Paris on February 20, 1814 , which he led until May 15 1830 was appointed as a major general to the commandant of Kolberg . In this position he made great contributions to the garrison school system.

After Ledebur on March 30, 1840. Lieutenant-General had been promoted, he received on 26 November 1848 for health reasons his requested leave with pension . In addition, on December 25, 1848, he was given the character of General of the Cavalry. Ledebur died in Schwedt on the Oder, where he had retired, on April 26, 1852 at the age of 75. Experiences from the war years 1806 and 1807 (Berlin 1855) appeared from the papers he left behind .

Ledebur had married Lisette Karoline von Elsner (1789–1871) on November 4, 1830 in Kolberg. She was the daughter of the Prussian Lieutenant General Karl Christian von Elsner (1755–1815).
