Philip Hindes (born September 22, 1992 in Krefeld ) is a British - German track cyclist and two-time Olympic champion.

Athletic career

Philip Hindes began his sporting career as a rower , but despite good performance had little chance of further qualifying as he is too small for this sport at 1.74 meters. He switched to cycling, which he had already done for fitness purposes. Philip Hindes has been training at the Heinrich-Heine-Sportgymnasium in Kaiserslautern since the youth class . In 2009 he finished second in the team sprint at the German track cycling championships (with Christian Bartel) and third in the Keirin in the juniors. In the following year he became German junior champion in the team sprint with Benjamin König, and took second place three times in the sprint , keirin and time trial . At the Junior Track World Championships in Montichiari he achieved third place in the team sprint together with Stefan Bötticher and Robert Kanter , at the European Junior Championships in Saint Petersburg he was third in the sprint.

Hindes is the son of a British father who was stationed in Germany as a soldier in the British Army , and a German mother; he has both nationalities. In December 2010 the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) granted his application to start British Cycling for the British cycling association . In April 2012 he was a member of the British national team at the UCI Track World Championships 2012 and started as a start-up in the team sprint together with the world and Olympic champions Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny. Because of a mistake, the British team was relegated.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Hindes won the gold medal in the team sprint together with Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny. After the race, however, he came under fire: he fell in qualifying. At first he spoke of a deliberate fall because he hadn't had a successful start; that was agreed within the team. He later corrected himself and stated that the rear wheel had since slipped away. Official of British Cycling explained the different statements of Hindes difficulties of Neubürgers with the English language.

In 2016 Hindes was nominated for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he won the team sprint together with Callum Skinner and Jason Kenny . At the Commonwealth Games 2018 he finished second in the team sprint with Ryan Owens and Joseph Truman .
