UEC European Road Championships 2017

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The UEC Road European Championships 2017 ( 2017 UEC Road European Championships ) took place from August 2 to 6, 2017 in Herning , Denmark .

At these championships twelve titles in the elite, junior and U23 categories were awarded to men and women respectively. 751 drivers from 47 countries were registered. Fast races were expected due to the flat track profiles.

The organizers counted the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff and Edvald Boasson Hagen , the French Bryan Coquard , the Italian Elia Viviani , the Slovenian Luka Mezgec , the Irish Sam Bennett and the Danish Magnus Cort Nielsen among the favorites for the men's elite race . Among the women were Anna van der Breggen , Ellen van Dijk , Marianne Vos and Kirsten Wild . Her competitors were the Italian Giorgia Bronzini , the Belgian Jolien D'hoore and the reigning world champion in road racing, the Danish Amalie Dideriksen .

The start and finish were at the MCH Exhibition Center in Herning . The time trial routes lead the athletes through several neighboring communities. The route for the road race consists of a 20-kilometer lap which the women have to complete six times and the men twelve times.

The most successful team came from the hosts Denmark with four gold medals and a total of nine medals. The Danish U23 driver Pernille Mathiesen alone won gold twice. In second place, the Dutch team ranked the three gold medals, two of which went to the strong Dutch drivers - Marianne Vos and Ellen van Dijk - who won both road races and the individual time trial. Van Dijk managed to defend her title in the individual time trial from the previous year. The Italian team took third place in the medal table with a total of six medals, two of which were gold. The German team drove home with two bronze medals for Lisa Klein and Niklas Märkl . Marc Hirschi won a bronze medal in the U23 men's road race for Switzerland.

The championships suffered from rainfalls, which is why, despite the rain of medals for Denmark, they did not become the folk festival that the organizers had hoped for, such as the UCI Road World Championships 2011 .
