Sam Bennett (born October 16, 1990 in Wervik , Belgium ) is an Irish cyclist .
career
Sam Bennett was Irish road racing champion in the junior class in 2008 and won the gold medal in the points race at the European Junior Championships in Pruszków, Poland . After becoming the Irish U23 road champion in 2010, he drove as a stagiaire for the French UCI ProTeam at the end of the season . From 2011 to 2013 Bennett drove for the UCI Continental Team An Post-Sean Kelly Team . a. Win a stage in the Tour of Britain 2010.
In 2014 he moved to the German UCI Professional Continental Team NetApp-Endura , later the UCI WorldTeam Bora-hansgrohe . For this team, he won the one-day race Around Cologne 2014 and a stage of the Tour of Oman 2015 in the sprint of the peloton .
In 2015 and 2016 he won, among other things, Paris-Bourges twice and in 2017 with a stage near Paris-Nice his first race of the UCI WorldTour . After further successes, he won four stages in the Tour of Turkey , also a WorldTour race, in autumn 2017 .
In the mass sprint of the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia 2018 , Bennett won his first leg of the day in a Grand Tour ahead of the winner of the second and third stage Elia Viviani . He continued his winning streak and also won the 12th stage and the final stage in Rome. The Irishman also won the one-day race around Cologne . In autumn he won three stages and points classification of the Tour of Turkey.
In the spring of 2019 Bennett won five stages of WorldTour stage races: one on the UAE Tour , two near Paris-Nice and two on the Tour of Turkey. He achieved further victories in the WorldTour in the course of the year at stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné , the BinckBank Tour and the Vuelta a España .
After the 2019 season, Bennett moved to Deceuninck-Quick-Step after receiving approval from his previous team. Previously, an arbitration tribunal of the Union Cycliste Internationale had declared a preliminary contract concluded with Bora-hansgrohe during the season to be binding.
