Matthew Martin Brammeier (born June 7, 1985 in Liverpool , United Kingdom ) is an Irish track and road cyclist .
Athletic career
Brammeier was British road champion in the junior class road race in 2003. The following year he and Mark Cavendish won the UIV Cup at the six-day race in Dortmund on the track . In 2005 he was successful in part of the Girvan Three Day. In 2006 Brammeier got a contract with DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed and from 2007 he drove for the Belgian Continental Team Profel Ziegler . In his first season there he was British time trial champion in the U23 class. That same year he was hit by a truck while training and broke both legs.
Matthew Brammeier started for Ireland at the end of 2009. By 2017 he was five times Irish road champion and one time trial champion. In 2011 he drove for the UCI WorldTeam HTC-Highroad and in 2012 for Omega Pharma-Quick-Step . After a year with the Dimension Data team in 2016, he moved to the Irish team Aqua Blue Sport .
In August 2015, Brammeier was seriously injured during the Tour of Utah when he overlooked a curve and collided with an escort vehicle with almost no brakes. He suffered several fractures and a tear in his lung. In 2018 he and his wife, racing driver Nikki Brammeier , founded MUDIIITA, a training team for young British cross-country cyclists .
In June 2018, Matthew Brammeier announced his immediate retirement from competitive cycling. From August 2018 he will work as the endurance national coach for British Cycling .
