Martin Earley (born June 15, 1962 in Clonsilla , Dublin ) is a retired Irish cyclist .
career
In 1978 Martin Earley won the Junior Tour of Ireland . In 1981 he took first place at the Shay Elliott Memorial and in 1982 with Rás Tailteann . In 1983 he started for the first time at the UCI Road World Championships and was classified as 67th in the amateur road race. In 1984 he started at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and finished 19th in the individual road race. The following year he turned professional and won the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia . This made him the third Irishman who succeeded next to Seamus Elliott and Stephen Roche . Earley started eight times in the Tour de France . In 1989 he won the eighth stage and the overall team classification with the PM-Concorde team (with Steven Rooks and Sean Kelly, among others ). In the same year, the team also won the Tour of Ireland team championship . In 1994 he was Irish road racing champion; Earley also won the Tom Simpson Memorial .
In 1996, Martin Earley competed in the Olympic Games a second time after 1984 , this time in cross country (mountain biking), and turned 25.
Earley, known for his giant chrome glasses, later worked as a physiotherapist and cycling coach . He is married to former cyclist Catherine Swinnerton . In 2017 the Martin Earley Tour took place in Kildare for the 16th time , the proceeds of which will go to the Marie Keating Foundation , a cancer aid organization.
