The Saarbahn GmbH is a transport company based in Saarbrücken . It was founded in 2002 as the legal successor to the company for trams in the Saartal and is the operator of most of the bus routes in the Saarbrücken regional association and the Saarbahn .
history
The city of St. Johann established the first steam tram , the "fiery Elias", in 1890. It had a line route from Saarbrücken via St. Johanner Markt to Luisenthal . On April 9, 1892, the “Society for Tramways in the Saar Valley” (GSS) was founded and took over; on July 22, 1892 the entry was made in the commercial register. From February 8, 1899, the first section of the railway on the 5.85 km long route from Malstatt to St. Arnual was operated electrically and numerous other lines were built. The tram carried a record number of 22.3 million passengers at the beginning of the First World War. With the mobilization on August 1, 1914, the service could only be maintained to a limited extent, but the railway remained on the road to success. In 1917 the GSS recorded a 44% increase in passengers and a 50% increase in revenue. During the time of the League of Nations and the reorganization in 1935 , several lines were expanded, rebuilt or rebuilt - only to be almost completely closed on September 1, 1939 at the start of the war. From 1945 to 1948 operations were gradually resumed on various routes. From 1948 trolleybuses were used for the first time on the route to Heusweiler . Under the impression of regular traffic jams and traffic delays, the decision was made to operate all local transport with buses in the long term, as these obstacles can avoid them. The last tram ran on May 22, 1965. The company for trams in the Saartal AG was for around 30 years a pure bus operation, the "Saartal-Linien". Between 1958 and 1965, the Gesellschaft für Straßenbahnen im Saartal AG gradually converted all tram routes and two trolleybus routes to diesel buses. At the beginning of the 90s, however, the bus system had reached its performance limit and the lines, some of which were already running every 2 minutes, were chronically overcrowded. With the conversion of Bahnhofstrasse into a pedestrian zone, a central axis was also removed. In 1992 a " Saarbahn " was designed, a tram-train based on the Karlsruhe model , which was supposed to connect the region across city and country borders. Saarbrücken became the first German city to completely rebuild a local rail transport system. In June 1995, construction work began on the new construction of the inner city route from the Roman fort to the Lower Malstatt. After almost two and a half years of construction, the first 19 km long section from Saargemünd to Saarbrücken-Ludwigstrasse was put into operation on October 24, 1997. Subsequently, the Josefsbrücke was rebuilt and the route to the north was extended at great financial and architectural expense, so that the route will be extended on July 31, 1999 to Cottbuser Platz, on November 12, 2000 to Siedlerheim and on September 24, 2001 to Riegelsberg Süd could. At the same time, the train stations in Brebach , Güdingen and Kleinblittersdorf that were still designed for DB operations were structurally adapted. In 2002 it was renamed "Saarbahn GmbH". The further construction through Riegelsberg turned out to be complicated, as many residents did not agree with the route, a citizens' initiative was founded and several residents appealed. Instead of the planned 2007, operations to Walpershofen / Etzenhofen could only be opened on September 26, 2009. From Etzenhofen, the route of the former Köllertalbahn was swiveled and this was then reactivated first on November 1, 2011 to Heusweiler Markt and then on October 5, 2014 to Lebach - Jabach . The Saarbahn line is thus completed for the time being.

Saarbahn
The Saarbahn has been fully integrated into the Saarland Transport Association (SaarVV) since August 1, 2005 , which started operations on this date. In the first years of operation (between the commissioning of the Saarbahn in 1997 and the founding of the SaarVV in 2005), however, a special company tariff applied to the company. The house tariff was abandoned at that time (with the exception of personal cards for employees, retirees and their relatives, the short-haul tariff, the Saarbahn’s senior citizens’s monthly pass, the joint tariff with Forbus and the connection tariff with SABUS in Sarreguemines itself) because the Saarbahn’s traffic area is entirely within the saarVV ( There is no cross-association tariff in the Saarbahn area, not even on the short section to the French Sarreguemines, which is also integrated into the saarVV tariff).
If you wanted to use public transport with several transport companies in Saarland before the association was founded, you had to contact the Verkehrsverbundgesellschaft Saar mbH (VGS). There you could buy tickets for the VGS transition tariff. This made it possible to use the Saarbahn and local trains of the DB Regio with just one ticket. A bilateral tariff cooperation between Saarbahn GmbH and DB AG or the mutual recognition of tickets was not necessary.
In the meantime, the DB has canceled all six tariff points concerned on the course book route 684, most recently at Kleinblittersdorf station in December 2003 (since then no DB trains have stopped there).
Independently of this, the Saarbahn recognized and recognizes international tickets on the upper Saar line (KBS 684) according to the TCV tariff , provided they contain the Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof - Sarreguemines section (e.g. tickets that go on the Berlin - Saarbrücken - Sarreguemines or Saarbrücken - Sarreguemines - Paris).

Timetable
From November 1, 2006 a new timetable was in effect with other bus routes and some new stops. The renovation became necessary because the urban living, working and leisure structures have changed since the last line optimization in 1988. As a result, the use of bus and train lines has changed fundamentally in some cases. New development areas that were not yet adequately connected have been better integrated into the new route network plan, and parallel operations and time-consuming “zigzag journeys” that date back to the time before the Saarbahn was introduced have been eliminated.
The new three-digit numbering follows a Saarland-wide uniform scheme. The exception is the cross-border bus line 30 to Forbach and line 11E, which is used on trade fair days.
The new timetable was partly strongly criticized by the passengers. The operator made improvements that led to a partially new timetable from May 1, 2007. There were changes among others at the Rodenhof, the Eschberg, in Klarenthal and between Saarbrücken and Dudweiler. The old lines were partially restored here.
After the extension of the Saarbahn to Walpershofen / Etzenhofen, the timetable was adjusted on November 1st, 2009.
On November 1, 2011, a new timetable was introduced due to the extension of the Saarbahn to Heusweiler. In addition to the longer Saarbahn route, the new timetable also includes other minor changes.
After the completion of the remaining stretch of the Saarbahn to Lebach on October 6, 2014, a new timetable was launched on December 5, 2014. This was improved again on January 1st, April 14th and most recently on June 1st, 2015.
