The Gymnasium am Schloss ( fr. Lycée Schloss ) is a high school in Saarbrücken with a scientific and musical branch.

education

The grammar school at the castle has its basic structure as a mathematical and scientific grammar school. There is a mathematical and scientific branch with the language sequence French (with a special profile as the first foreign language), English (in the compulsory elective area also Spanish, Italian and Latin) and since the 2001/2002 school year a music branch. Up to the school year 2005/06 there was also a separate language branch. The study of Latin is still possible on a voluntary basis (with a sufficient number of participants) in the form of a 2-hour study group or 3 hours up to the 12th grade with a subsequent final examination (Latinum). In addition, students from grade 10 can take Italian and Spanish in the form of an elective and / or additional course.

Branch of music

The Gymnasium am Schloss was the first Saarland school to have a musical branch in 2001 . Since 1985, students in grades 5–10 have had the opportunity to take extended music lessons. This consisted of two more hours of music per week, in which the focus was on making music. The aim of the music branch is to promote talented students who are particularly interested in music and to lead them to a general university entrance qualification. In grades 5-7, music is a four-hour non-written subject, from year 8 onwards it becomes a written subject.

Scientific branch

The natural sciences branch is attended by the majority of students (as in other high schools). The difference to the music branch lies solely in the weighting and number of hours of the natural science subjects physics (2-hour group in grades 5–6 (also accessible for music), in grades 8 and 9 four hours (2 extra hours to deepen the content and conduct student experiments, in grades 8 and 9 written subject, compulsory occupancy in grade 10)), chemistry (in grade 9 four hours (2 extra hours to deepen the content / treatment of advanced topics and implementation of student experiments), in grade 10 occupancy requirement, as well as 3 hours (1 extra hour to deepen the content), evaluation to compensate for the same as the written subject, but when the subject is balanced it is the same as the non-written subject) and biology (2 hours per week in class 8 (repetition and consolidation of the topics from grades 5–7; treatment of advanced topics (partly redundant with geography)), but no occupancy in class 10 and no other additional hours).

history

Abistreich at Saarbrücker Gymnasium am Schloss

The Gymnasium am Schloss (GaS) goes back to the “Reform Realgymnasium”, which was opened in 1910. It was thus the third higher school for boys a year after the unification of the three sub-towns Saarbrücken , St. Johann and Malstatt-Burbach .

In 1944 the school building on Ottostraße in Malstatt was badly damaged by the effects of the war, which forced the school to move several times. In 1957 this led to the re-establishment of the “Städtisches Knabenrealgymnasium”. This comprised 10 classes and around 320 students. The number of students rose steadily up to the record mark in 1968 with over 1070 students. This reached another high point in the 1979/80 school year with around 940 students. In 1964, the Knabenrealgymnasium moved into the old school building of the Mädchenrealgymnasium on Spichererbergstrasse.

The name of the school management changed to Gymnasium am Schloss in 1976. A coeducational high school was created with a newly designed upper level, which leads students to general university entrance qualifications. The school has had afternoon care since 1996 and has been recognized as a voluntary all-day school since 2003. In 2001 the offer was expanded with the first Saarland music branch.
