The Marienschule is a four-class private grammar school with a mathematical, scientific and linguistic branch. Her name is derived from Mary , the mother of Jesus in the Christian tradition.
The Marienschule is a state-recognized school privately owned by the Diocese of Trier . Independent schools are alternative educational offers made possible by the Saarland Private School Act. Certificates, promotions and exams at these schools have the same validity as the state schools. School fees are not charged.
profile
You can choose between two foreign languages, French or English, for the 5th grade. The language that has not been selected is then also taught as a major from year 6 onwards. In addition, the Marienschule offers a wind class as well as a full-day class per year. For the 8th grade you have the choice between the linguistic branch, in which you can take Latin or Spanish as a third foreign language, or the natural science branch with increased Nawi lessons and physics as a main subject. Linguistic students can take part in internal exchange programs with a French and participate in a Spanish school and also take the exam for the language certificates DELF (French) and Cambridge Certificate (English). As a MINT-friendly school, there is close cooperation with the Saarland University and College for Technology and Economics , which enables talented students to study as a junior .
history
The Marienschule was founded in 1950 at the instigation of the then Saarland Minister-President Johannes Hoffmann as a higher education institution for Catholic girls and maintained by the Institute of St. Dominic of the Dominican Sisters in Speyer ("Poor School Sisters"). It continued the tradition of the Ursuline School, which was established by the Ursuline Sisters in 1895 and closed by the National Socialists in 1938. The re-establishment is due to the conditions of the post-war period : Together with the attached boarding school , children could be looked after who had long journeys or were half-orphans as a result of the war and whose mothers had to be employed.
In 1969 there was a protest against student co-administration at the Marienschule, which was discussed in the school newspaper Wilder Reiter .
The Saarland upper level reform of 1972 led to increased cooperation with neighboring schools, so that the school was also open to the Protestant part of the population. In 1983 co-education was introduced. Personnel shortages forced the original sponsor to decide whether to continue running the school in a modified form at the beginning of the 1990s. On August 1, 1994, the Trier diocese took over the sponsorship of the St. Dominikus Institute in Speyer . The school sisters from Speyer were still present in the teaching staff until 2007. In 2009 they were officially retired from the Marienschule.
In 2006 the Young Wind Orchestra was founded at the Marienschule. The Young Wind Orchestra will take part in the Flicorno d'Oro orchestral competition for the third time in 2019.
In 2010 the Marienschule celebrated its 60th anniversary. Some projects initiated by the sisters, such as the partnership with the Collège / Lycée St. Victor in Valence and the Ghana -Basar, an aid project that takes place every two years during Advent , continue to shape school life. The school colors blue and yellow are traditionally the colors of Mary in Christian iconography and take up the color program of the windows in the school chapel.
In school 2012/13, two school classes from the Marienschule were awarded a fair class (class of fair trade ).
Caritas Saarbrücken offers paid afternoon care as part of the voluntary all-day school at the Marienschule.
In 2018, students from a class at the Saarbrücken Marienschule took part in a competition against the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium Pirmasens in the television program Tigerentenclub .
