The Saarland University of Technology and Economics (htw saar) came into being after the Saarland University of Applied Sciences was renamed by the University of Applied Sciences Act of May 15, 1991 and is located in Saarbrücken.

As of April 2009, the htw saar changed its department structure to a faculty structure. What used to be seven departments plus one in the process of being established and two non-subject courses have become four faculties .

history

Historical logo

The htw saar can be traced back directly to the State Higher Technical College , founded in 1946 , which was renamed the State Engineering School in 1956 and the Saarland University of Applied Sciences in 1971 . It goes back indirectly to the Ecole pratique des mines founded in Geislautern in 1807 and the Wilbert private technical school in Saarbrücken founded in 1909. At times (1971–1989) the technical courses were also merged with the artistic courses of the State School for Art and Applied Arts, founded in 1924 (today: Saar College of Fine Arts ) to form a university of applied sciences.

The Faculty of Social Sciences, founded in 2005, goes back to the Catholic University of Social Work , which was founded in 1971 and closed in 2005/2008 .

In 2013 a record result was achieved in the acquisition of third-party funding: € 5.7 million went to htw saar and the research institute FITT.

Faculties

Goebenstrasse campus of htw saar
Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AuB)
School of Architecture and Civil Engineering

The htw saar is the only university in Saarland that offers courses in architecture and civil engineering.

In 2009 the School of Architecture Saar (SAS) and the Faculty of Civil Engineering merged to form the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The architecture course is organized consistently project-oriented, whereby the students can mostly work on real situations, e.g. B. in the context of regional, national and international student competitions. In the field of civil engineering , project lessons are also practiced from the first semester .

The faculty conducts interdisciplinary and cross-university research on industrial culture. The faculty's research institutes organize a. international colloquia in which the students are actively involved. In other respects, too, teaching and research are closely intertwined. B. in master's studios or international student seminars.

Faculty of Engineering (IngWi)
School of Engineering

The classic engineering disciplines of electrical engineering and mechanical engineering have been the nucleus for new courses in the last two decades, e.g. B. Specialized subjects or specializations. As the only university in Saarland, the htw saar offers the electrical engineering course as a bachelor's and master's degree.

In 1984 the practical computer science course was introduced at the htw saar .

In 1997, the mechanical engineering discipline was differentiated into

  • General mechanical engineering and energy and process engineering (today merged again in "Mechanical engineering and process engineering");
  • Sensor and precision engineering has also existed since 1997, today as a bridging discipline “mechatronics / sensor technology” between mechanics, electronics and IT.

In 2001, the htw saar established the first bachelor's degree in communication informatics in Saarland and initiated a complete switch to bachelor's and master's degrees, which was completed in the winter semester 2005/06 for the entire range of courses.

In 2003, the htw saar also offered the first Saarland master's course with the communication informatics course.

In addition to teaching, the faculty is strongly research-oriented. The fields of work of the more than twenty research groups and institutes range from applied materials technology to neurosciences.

Faculty of Social Sciences (SoWi)
School of Social Sciences

In 2005, the Bachelor's degree in Management and Expertise in Nursing and Health Care was introduced as the first degree in this faculty. You can take up this after completing your training in a nursing and health care profession along with professional experience.

The htw saar took over the “Social Work” course of the Catholic University for Social Work , which was closed in 2008 and had not accepted any applicants since 2005 due to the announced closure.

The degree program in social work and childhood education (from 2006) represents a continuation of the KHSA's offerings. In 2011, the range of courses was expanded to include the bachelor's degree in childhood education, which is integrated into the profession. In 2012, the training-integrated model course Care B.Sc. introduced. Together with Saarland University , the htw saar offers the part-time Master of Evaluation course.

The science-based and practice-oriented study programs are based on extensive research. The focus of social science research is in particular applied health, nursing and aging research, socio-educational educational research, migration, integration and interculturality, regional research and urban (district) and district development.

Faculty of Economics (WiWi)
Business school

The study of business administration started in 1971 with six specializations, which adapted to the demand of the market. Today the htw saar offers the subjects of logistics, marketing, personnel management, accounting and auditing and business informatics.

The European Business Administration course was introduced in 1997 and expanded to International Business Administration in 2002 .

The International Tourism Management course has existed since 2006 .

The industrial engineering course imparts engineering and economic knowledge as well as soft skills for later activities in management, corporate management and production economics .

The program Aviation Business and Piloting (since 2008) combines the training as pilots, European transport pilot license ( ATPL license shortly ATPL) with an academic education.

Since 2014, htw saar has been offering the master's degree in cultural management in cooperation with the Saar University of Music . The Saar College of Fine Arts has also been a cooperation partner since 2017 .

In addition to teaching, the faculty is also active in research. The main research areas include B. Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Digital Marketing, Big Data and Industry 4.0, Culture, Integration and Non-Profit Management and Tourism Management.

Student body of the htw saar

organization

The student body of the htw saar is represented by its student parliament (StuPa) , which is elected annually , which adopts the budget, elects the general student committee (AStA) of the htw saar and controls its work. For a long time, a special feature of the German university landscape was the cafeteria operation at the htw saar, as the AStA of the htw saar operated all the cafeterias of the htw saar itself. Due to the operation of the cafeteria, the student body raised higher fees for their own purposes (EUR 41.25 per student for the summer semester 2012 plus EUR 91 for the semester ticket ). With the move to the new building "Haus des Wissens" in the summer semester 2018, the student union in Saarland took over the operation of the cafeteria.

2010 until today

In June 2010 the AStA canceled the StuPa elections, so that from October 1, 2010 there was no StuPa for a year; the German university newspaper reported on the conflicts at htw saar. Even after the establishment of a new StuPa in the 2011/12 election period, the AStA operated without a budget. A StuPa committee of inquiry into the AStA finances was dissolved by Rector Wolfgang Cornetz, the Rector also dissolved the election committee and canceled the electoral modality decided by the StuPa. In the following election year there was no StuPa again. A reaction from Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer as the legal supervisor of the htw saar was pending. The public prosecutor's office has been investigating since a no- confidence vote against the former AStA and criminal charges against the former AStA and university management without prior notice . After the new rector Wolrad Rommel took office, a new StuPa could be elected from February 4 to 8, 2013, the turnout was unusually high at over 24%, but collapsed again the following year. Furthermore, new AStA speakers were elected in the following years.
