history

1978 - foundation

The idea of a Franco-German cooperation in the higher education sector arose as early as the 1960s, inspired by the Élysée Treaty (Franco-German friendship treaty of 1963), in which u. a. the joint promotion of education and youth was established.

The French region of Lorraine and the German Saarland offered themselves for such an initiative for various reasons: on the one hand, they wanted to upgrade the regions in terms of educational policy and, on the other hand, they wanted to use the great potential: traditionally there are close economic and cultural relationships between the two border regions.

The support of the respective political leaders was quickly won and it was decided to set up a first Franco-German course. Students with excellent performance in their basic studies and a completed intermediate diploma should be given the opportunity to receive the two national Diplôme Maîtrise (F) and Diplom FH (D) after two years of study . The first Franco-German double diploma was born. The first courses were business administration, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering, soon followed by civil engineering and computer science, most recently logistics in 2002.

The Foreign Ministers of the FRG and the French Republic signed the government agreement on September 15, 1978, with which the Franco-German University Institute for Technology and Economics / Institut Supérieur Franco-Allemand de Techniques, d'Économie et de Sciences (DFHI / ISFATES) with its headquarters was founded in Saarbrücken and Metz. As an organizational unit of the first and thus oldest German-French university cooperation (HTW des Saarlandes and University of Metz), the institute can look back on over 30 years of experience in German-French university education; It is still the most extensive and numerically largest Franco-German university cooperation. Since 1978, over 2000 students have successfully completed the course.

1997 - The Franco-German University

In 1997 the establishment of the Franco-German University / Université franco-allemande (DFH / UFA) was decided within the framework of an international agreement between the two countries, the Weimar Agreement . It is a network of member universities from Germany and France based in Saarbrücken, to which the DFHI / ISFATES has belonged since the beginning.

1999 - New study structure

In 1999, shortly after his 20th birthday, the DFHI / ISFATES introduced a new study structure. The training is adapted to the changed framework conditions and modernized.

The course is now four years and is accessible immediately after graduating from high school or the French Baccalauréat .

2005 - Bachelor / Master

IPEFAM (May 2012)

As part of the implementation of the Bologna Agreement (1999) on the Europe-wide introduction of the Bachelor-Master system by 2008, all six Franco-German courses will be converted to the joint Bachelor / License or Master degrees . A trinational Bachelor's degree in European Construction Management is also being set up in additional cooperation with the University of Luxembourg .

2009 - New building in Metz

Since February 26th, 2009 the ISFATES in Metz has been located in the Institut Polytechnique d'Études Franco-Allemandes et de Management (IPEFAM) on the Technopôle campus of the Université de Lorraine. The new Franco-German building in striking green offers ideal conditions for teaching with a good infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment and also houses the institute's administration.

Character of the university institute

In addition to the subject-specific lessons, which predominantly take place in the language of the place of study, the respective partner language (French or German), English and intercultural communication are taught over the entire duration of the course . The resulting Franco-German training profile with intercultural and foreign language skills enables students to work in the respective subject area in a national as well as in a Franco-German and international context, with corresponding job market opportunities and career prospects.

Since the students of the German and French contingents change their study location together, intercultural cooperation can be practiced in theory and practice from the first semester.

The manageable number of students (approx. 120 new admissions per academic year, approx. 20 students per course) enables good communication among the students. The student association DIVA (Dfhi-Isfates-Verein-Association) with its numerous activities contributes to the relatively familiar atmosphere .

Course of study

All binational courses at DFHI / ISFATES follow the same course of study: the course begins in Metz for both bachelor students and in Saarbrücken for master students. Half of the study period is completed in France and half in Germany.

Course of studies of the Bachelor courses:

  • 1st and 2nd semester at the Université de Lorraine in Metz
  • 3rd and 4th semester at the HTW des Saarlandes
  • 5th semester at the Université de Lorraine (optional in a third country)
  • 6th semester at the HTW in Saarbrücken - Bachelor thesis

Course of study of the master’s degree programs

  • 1st semester at the HTW in Saarbrücken
  • 2nd semester at the HTW in Saarbrücken (optional in a third country)
  • 3rd semester at the Université de Lorraine in Metz
  • 4th semester graduation project and master's thesis (outside of your own language area)

The practical phases within the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs are not completed in their own language area (i.e. usually for German students in France or in French-speaking countries and vice versa).

As a result of the additional cooperation with the University of Luxembourg, the trinational Bachelor's degree in European Construction Management has a different course from the 3rd semester (3rd and 4th semesters in Luxembourg). With 7 semesters (instead of the usual 6 semesters), the course also has a different study structure. The 5th semester is dedicated to the practical phase in a company. This is followed by a 3-semester binational master's degree in European Construction Management (1st semester in Saarbrücken, 2nd and 3rd semester in Metz), so that the maximum duration of 10 semesters is not exceeded here either.

Support association

In order to support the goals of the Franco-German University Institute, the Friends of the Franco-German University Institute was founded in February 1990 on the initiative of the then director of the DFHI, Professor Rainer Reisel, with the help of the Saarland Chamber of Commerce and the Saarland Chamber of Crafts . The task of the association, which is recognized as a non-profit organization, is the ideal and material support of the institute.
