The University Paul Verlaine - Metz ( French Université Paul Verlaine - Metz ; merged to form the University of Lorraine since 2012 ) is a state university in the French city of Metz , with around 14,500 students and almost 2,000 academic employees. The rector (French president ) of the university is Luc Johann .

The university was founded in December 1970 and is named after the French poet Paul Verlaine , who was born in Metz in 1844. It goes back to a natural science faculty (French: faculté des sciences ) from the years 1811 to 1816.
