Yaesu FT-817

The Yaesu FT-817 / FT-817ND is an amateur radio transceiver from the Japanese manufacturer Yaesu and the first version came onto the market around 2000. The very compact device has all the shortwave bands on the transmission side ; an additional 6 m , 2 m and 70 cm , as well as other frequencies outside the amateur radio bands . The device can be operated with an internal battery pack (already included in the delivery of the FT-817ND version), whereby an output power of 2.5  watts is recommended. When operated on an external voltage source of 13.8  volts or the battery pack, a maximum of 5 watts is achieved.

FT-817 and FT-817ND

The differences are small on the outside, however, in the newer version FT-817ND, minor protective measures have been taken to address the undervoltage problem (with the FT-817 the power amplifier heated up a lot as soon as the battery voltage dropped below 8 volts) and otherwise mainly relate to the supplied accessories. In addition, the FT-817ND has a factory installed to prevent overcharging of batteries with the NC72C.

The FT-817ND includes the FNB-85 NiMH battery pack. 9.6 volts, 1400 mAh and the charger NC72C included.

This device handles amateur radio on shortwave with low transmission power ( QRP ).

At the beginning of 2018, Yaesu launched the FT-818 as a successor on the market.
