The Aung Tagun-3 was a Myanmar ferry that sank off the coast of Rakhine on March 13, 2015 . At least 61 people were killed in the accident of the 19-year-old ship built in China.
history
The government-owned two-deck ferry left the port of Taunggok on the evening of March 13 at around 8:30 p.m. local time with over 200 people and about 129 tons of cargo on board for Sittwe . After leaving the port of departure, the ship encountered heavy precipitation and, after traveling about 50 nautical miles in a northerly direction, entered a bad weather area. The Aung Tagun-3 capsized and sank off the city of Myebon . Of the officially 214 people on board, 167 people were rescued alive and 34 dead by the following day. More than a dozen people remained missing and it is feared that there were more people on board without a ticket who do not appear on any passenger list. According to later reports, there were over 225 passengers on board the ship and the number of survivors was adjusted to 169 and the number of victims to at least 61. In order to prevent accidents of this kind in the future, Myanmar wants to check all state-owned ferries and compensate all victims.
