About this picture

The Rakhine State ( Burmese ရခိုင်ပြည်နယ် , MLCTS : ra.hkuing pranynay; BGN / PCGN : yagaingbyinè; formerly Arakan ; also Rakhine ) is one of the 15 administrative units of Myanmar .

The Rakhine State is separated from the central Irrawaddy by the Arakan Mountains, which are up to 3,053 m high . On the coast between 20 ° and 18 ° 30 ' north latitude there are countless smaller islands, cliffs, banks and shallows. On the coast and on the islands, especially on Cheduba (also Manaung Island), there are so-called "volcanoes" that only emit burning gas . Petroleum was found in some places . The interior of the country is mountainous, with elevations between 600 and 2600 m. The forests used to be home to numerous tigers and elephants. The rivers are insignificant, except for the Kuladan (or Arakan) flowing in a north-south direction , which forms a delta with the Mi and other rivers . The Naf River , which forms the border with Chittagong and Bangladesh, has a very long estuary .

The Rakhine State is divided into five districts: Sittway , Myauk U , Maungtaw , Kyaukpyu and Thandwe .

The country's climate is one of the rainiest on earth: In the rainy season from May to October, around 4.5 m of rain falls .

The nature of the country offers very favorable conditions for rice cultivation . In the past, indigo , pepper , sugar cane , tobacco , betel nuts , pineapples , bananas and other tropical fruits were also grown. Also balm could be won. The greatest treasure of the area, however, were the dense teak forests . Arakan was the extreme western area where there were edible bird nests . Gold dust and silver were found on the east side of the Arakan-Joma Mountains .

In the 19th century, Arakan was the northernmost division of the Indo-British lieutenant governor of Burma in rear India . The division was at that time 36,780 km² and consisted of the districts Akyab, North Arakan , Kyaukpyu and Sandwe or Thandwe (English Sandoway). When Arakan fell to England, the total population was about 100,000, in 1872 it was 444,563, in 1881 587,518 and in 1891 671,899, including 442,674 Buddhists , 126,604 Muslims ( Rohingya ) and 10,593 Hindus . Dwellings were built of bamboo , stood on stakes and were covered with bamboo leaves.

The old capital was Mro-haung or Mjo-haung, the former Arakan or Dhagnawadi , is northeast of the current capital Sittwe and is surrounded by hills on which temples and pagodas were built. This capital is said to have had 100,000 inhabitants in the past, but - like the fort - has been in ruins since the 19th century.

In the south-east, near the city of Thandwe, lies the touristic and most famous beach of Myanmar, Ngapali .

Since October 2012, the Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for the entire Rakhine state because of ethnically motivated conflicts.
