Cheduba , also called Manaung Island , is an island of Myanmar ( Burma ) in the Bay of Bengal . It is of volcanic origin and is located about 15 kilometers southwest of the island of Ramree , near the southwest coast of Myanmar.

history

In April 1762 a severe earthquake occurred in the Bay of Bengal, which was immediately followed by a tsunami and hit the coastal region of Burma. Traditional information on the degree of destruction and the number of victims are not available. In 1841 the British sloop HMS Childers anchored off the island with the task of investigating the topographical conditions in order to prepare the planned construction of a naval base or a commercial port. At that time, there were 8,534 residents in 28 villages on the main island of Cheduba and the Ye Island in the south of the island, which made up seven large communities (circles). The head of the island's population was a nobleman known as the Mug of Chedooba and several Buddhist priests who were revered as religious leaders. In addition to fishing, cotton and rice were grown. Several mud volcanoes were found on both islands, the surroundings of which were avoided and were bordered by wasteland and mangroves.
