Ross Edwards

Ross Edwards (born December 23, 1943 in Sydney ) is an Australian composer.

Life

Edwards studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the University of Adelaide . He received his PhD from the University of Sydney . His teachers included Sándor Veress and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies . After a stay in London , Edwards first taught at the University of Sydney and the Sydney Conservatory. Since 1980 he has lived as a freelance composer in Sydney.

Works

Well-known are the 1982 piano concerto, which was played in public for the first time in 1983 by Dennis Hennig with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Maninyas violin concerto (1988), which is dedicated to Dene Olding, and the Da pacem domine symphony (1991) as well the oboe concerto Bird Spirit Dreaming, premiered in 2002 with Diana Doherty and conducted by Lorin Maazel .

The composition Dawn mantras , created at the turn of the millennium, sounds every hour in the Powerhouse Museum for the procession of the apostles in a watch model by Richard Bartholomew Smith.

Awards

In 2002, 2005 and 2007 Edwards received a Classical Music Award. His symphony No. 3 was awarded in 2002, his guitar concerto with string orchestra in 2005 and a piano trio in 2007.
