Southern Stampede is a New Zealand ice hockey club from Queenstown , New Zealand , founded in 2005 and playing in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League . The club plays its home games at the Dunedin Ice Stadium . With five titles, the team is New Zealand's record champions.
history
Southern Stampede was founded in 2005 along with the New Zealand Ice Hockey League , of which it became one of four founding members. In its first season, the club reached first place in the regular season and thus qualified for the finals, in which they prevailed against the West Auckland Admirals 2-1 and 6-3. The following year Southern Stampede won 3-3 and 5-3 in the final against South Auckland Swarm . This was followed by two third places for the team before they lost 4-5 to the Canterbury Red Devils in the 2009 final . In 2011 and 2012, the team from Queenstown was runner-up. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 the title wins were three to five.
The Stampede's junior team, the Southern Juniors , play in the New Zealand Junior Elite League , the highest junior division in the country.
