The New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) is the top ice hockey division in New Zealand and is subordinate to the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation , a member of the IIHF . Although the league was founded in 2005 as an amateur league, many professional players use the opportunity of the northern hemisphere, while to collect their own summer break match practice in New Zealand since the league in the southern winter and in the northern summer is played. The league's ultimate goal, however, is to promote domestic ice hockey players and present them on an international level. The league's record champions are Southern Stampede with five championships .

In the 2019 season, five teams from three of New Zealand's four regions took part in the game:

Squad

According to the league's statutes, each team must have at least 18 field players and two goalkeepers in their squad, of which at least two players must be eligible to play for the New Zealand U18 national team and at least three players for the national U20 team. Since each squad must contain a minimum of five junior players, players cannot be counted twice.

The rest of the roster may be replenished with any number of domestic players and overseas imports, but each team may use a maximum of five foreign players during a game.

Seasonal structure

During a season of the NZIHL, the five teams initially play a regular season of 16 games. The final of the New Zealand Championship will ultimately be contested by the first two of the regular season, with the league leader having home rights.
