The 2005 season was the first season of the New Zealand Ice Hockey League , the highest New Zealand Ice Hockey League . The Southern Stampede became champions for the first time in the club's history .

In the regular season, each of the four teams played a total of six games. The two best-placed teams qualified for the championship finals. Each team received three points for a win after regular time, two points for a draw and zero points for a defeat after regular time. In addition, the penultimate received one, the last two bonus points.
