Farewell to Matjora ( Russian Прощание ) is a Soviet feature film. It is based on the novel of the same name (Прощание с Матёрой) by Valentin Rasputin . The director Larissa Schepitko , wife of Elem Klimow , had a fatal accident while filming in 1979. Therefore, after her death in 1981, the film was completed under the direction of Klimov and was released in Soviet cinemas in 1983. It was supposed to open the Berlinale in 1984, but was not approved for use abroad by the Soviet Film Association and was only shown successfully at the Berlin Film Festival in 1987.
action
The village of Matjora, located on an island, is to be evacuated because the river is being dammed by a new hydropower plant , which leads to the village being flooded. The residents, attached to their homeland and traditions, suffer from the forced relocation. One of them is old Darja, who has lived here all her life.
criticism
For the large personal lexicon of the film , Farewell to Matjora Klimov is "most poignant, his most visually and content-wise fascinating film".
The lexicon of the international film writes: "Located in the field of tension between progress and tradition, the film convinces with its deeply humane disposition and its staging, which uses overwhelming visual metaphors to make complex relationships recognizable" and gives the film the predicate "worth seeing".
