Wjatscheslav Petrovič Artemov ( Russian Вячеслав Петрович Артёмов , scientific transliteration Vjačeslav Petrovič Artëmov ; born June 29, 1940 in Moscow ) is a Russian composer .

biography

At the age of six, Artyomov received his first piano lessons from his father, a music teacher. At the age of 18 he began to compose. After graduating from school, he studied mathematics and physics at Moscow University before studying composition at the Moscow Conservatory from 1962 to 1968 . There he first attended the composition class of Sergei Balasanjan before he switched to the class of Nikolai Sidelnikow .

In 1975 Artjomow founded the improvisation ensemble Astreja together with the composers Wiktor Suslin and Sofia Gubaidulina . The composers improvised on folk instruments in weekly meetings in order to get ideas for their compositional work. The ensemble existed until 1981 and disbanded when Suslin emigrated to Germany.

After the Elegies Symphony was performed in Cologne in 1977 at the "Encounter with the Soviet Union" festival, Artjomow was publicly criticized by the chairman of the Soviet composers' association, Tichon Chrennikow , along with six other composers performed in Cologne (" Chrennikows Sieben ") . However, this criticism did not have a serious impact on his further career.

Artjomov attracted international attention in particular with his Requiem, which premiered in Moscow in 1988. Thereupon his symphonies The Morning Star arises and Gentle Emanation were premiered under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich in London and Washington.

Artyomov composed a large number of works for percussion ensemble, as well as chamber music, works for solo instruments and orchestral works. Artjomov's works are published by the music publishers Sikorski (Hamburg) and Muzyka (Moscow).

He is married to the poet Valerija Lyubetskaja and lives in Moscow.
